Brush away the plasticsoup with The Bamboo Brush Society and win!

Did you know that around 5 billion toothbrushes are sold each year worldwide? Along the beaches of Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia, we saw with our own eyes what happens to many of our toothbrushes. They end up in the sea or in nature and stay there for a very long time. Like us, Roger Nefkens, founder of The Bamboo Brush Society was shocked by the amount of waste on the beaches. That was the start of a company with an important mission: to brush away that plastic! And using a bamboo toothbrush is a good start!

Karimunjawa, tropical paradise

Walking along the beaches of a tiny island in Indonesia, Roger hopes to enjoy the clear blue sea, green palm trees and the relaxing vibe that comes with a tropical island like this. When he arrived at Karimunjawa, this idyllic image turns out to be wrong. The once white beaches are dotted with plastic rubbish. Flip-Flops, plastic bottles, straws and a striking number of toothbrushes: all products that Roger uses on a daily bases. He is shocked that all these daily consumer products even wash ashore on this small, remote island.

That should change, is what the entrepreneur from Amsterdam thinks at that moment. While reading about the plastic problem, he comes across an alternative to the floating plastic: bamboo. This sustainable material is increasingly used as a replacement for plastic. Roger is daydreaming while strolling over the polluted beaches and plants the first seed for what will later grow into The Bamboo Brush Society.

The Bamboo Brush Society

Bamboo grows very fast and is very strong. And it’s 100% biodegradable, so you can be sure that your toothbrush won’t float in the plastic soup for centuries. The Bamboo Brush Society is not just about toothbrushes. The company also sells a travel case for the toothbrush, travel cutlery, cotton buds and (as to expect from a surfer like Roger) a real wax comb for surfboards; all made of bamboo.

Toothbrush statistics

Buying a bamboo toothbrush doesn’t immediately solve the plastic problem. But every little bit helps! And when it comes to toothbrushes, that little bit is actually quite a big problem! If you change your toothbrush every 3 months, according to the advice of the dentist, you will use 4 toothbrushes per year. For a small country like the Netherlands, we’re talking about 68 million toothbrushes a year already!

Worldwide, about 5 billion plastic toothbrushes are sold each year. A large portion of all toothbrushes ever produced still roam our planet today. They wash ashore on beaches, float in our oceans, or lie on heaps of rubbish.

Subscriptions and packs

Roger and his team offer a toothbrush subscription. Each year you receive a package of 4 toothbrushes (enough for one year). That’s easy, you don’t have to search for bamboo toothbrushes. Do you prefer to be in control yourself, but you do want to buy enough for a longer period of time, then there are conveniently composed ‘gift packs’ for sale. Of course you can also give them as a present.

1% for the planet

The Bamboo Brush Society has set itself the goal of making the world a little bit more beautiful. They want less plastic rubbish by selling sustainable alternatives. But that’s not all. They have joined 1% for the planet, a global partnership of companies that donate 1% of their turnover to charities.

About me

Meet Patrick, a lover of reading and writing. He quit his job in the Dutch book trade to realise the dream of his Daisy: an around the world tour. Now, however, Patrick jokes that: “It has also become my dream," when a British tourist asked if he wanted to go home already. Patrick has changed his life thanks to Daisy and learned a lot about food waste and sustainable travel. He believes in the message that Daisy propagates and helps her to reach a large audience. Because everything Patrick learns he wants to also teach to others.
